On a chilly Friday afternoon in March, twenty “Speak Out” Challenge! Alumni joined us at Westminster for a reception with Black Rod and a tour of the Houses of Parliament.
We started the afternoon with refreshments in the Jubilee Café which went down extremely well and from there were shown through Westminster Hall to one of the many Committee Rooms in the Palace of Westminster. There we were joined by Black Rod who shared with us a brief history of his role within Parliament and then opened the floor for questions which gave our Alumni an opportunity to find out more about this intriguing role. Then it was our turn…2015-16 Champion Ajaye McDonald shared his experience of the programme with the group and Jo Wright, Runner Up 2015-16 gave a vote of thanks to Sir Jack, Jack Petchey Foundation and Speakers Trust.
Following the reception, we split into two groups for a tour of the Houses of Parliament which followed the route the Queen takes on the State Opening of Parliament taking in both the Commons and Lords Chambers. The tour was not only informative but our guide, Becky, made it fun for everyone and was happy to answer all our questions.
In the words of on the students on the day:
“The day itself was amazing and I wouldn’t have changed anything, I found the whole thing very interesting. I personally am fascinated by politics and it was a great insight into the building it all takes place in.”
