Jack Petchey's "Speak Out" Challenge! is now in its third full year.

Information on the 2009 Challenge!

1. Over 19,000 students from the 32 boroughs in London and the 14 districts in Essex will participate

 

2. There will be 500 workshop finals, 350+ Assembly Finals, 37 Regional Finals and 1 Grand Final

3. We estimate that 65,000+ people will attend the various finals

4. This will be the world's biggest youth speaking event of its kind

5. The project ties in with other curriculum subjects such as GCSE English, SEAL, Enterprise, Business Studies and Citizenship

6. The students have the opportuntiy to talk open and honestly on any subject they feel strongly about

7. The project will be funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation up to £550,000

 

8. Every student will receive up to six hours of training in the skills of public speaking and effective communication from professional trainers

9. The project begins in September 2008, and ends at the Gala Grand Final, 10th July 2009, Mermaid Events and Conference Centre, London

10. The training will be delivered by SpeakersBank, part of the Speakers Trust charity, and the UK's No.1 public speaking training organisation in the education sector

11. 40,000 unique visitors will visit the website

12. The Speak Out Challenge has inspired the BBC2 Series, The Speaker due to be aired in March 2009


Facts and statistics from the successful 2008 Challenge!

7. The project began in October 2007, and ended at the Gala Grand Final, 10th July 2008, Mermaid Events and Conference Centre, London

8. Training at London Special Educational Needs Schools and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) was extended

9. The training was delivered by SpeakersBank, part of the Speakers Trust charity, and the UK's No.1 public speaking training organisation in the education sector

Facts and statistics from the successful 2007 Challenge!


  1. Over 10,212 Year 10 state school students from each of the 32 boroughs in London participated


  2. Every student received up to six hours of training in the skills of public speaking and effective communication from professional trainers


  3. Ninety-six percent of the schools accepted the offer of the training


  4. One hundred percent of the teachers involved (over 500 teachers) have asked for the training to be repeated


  5. The project was fully funded, up to £350,000, by the Jack Petchey Foundation, one of the largest grant-making foundations in London


  6. The overall increase in confidence, as reported by the students, was 51%


  7. The top five subjects the students speak on are stereotyping; bullying; racism; poverty and music 


  8. Over 450 subjects were spoken about


  9. 30 Borough Finals were held throughout the year


  10. The Gala Grand Final was attended by 600 people on the 5th July 2007


  11. The training is delivered by SpeakersBank, part of the Speakers Trust charity, and the UK's No.1 public speaking training organisation in the education sector


  12. Successful pilot projects were held in Newham and Southwark involving Special Educational Needs Schools and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs)
